Our Department

Philosophers ask three foundational questions: What is the nature of the world? How do I know about it? What ought I to do? Philosophy both inherits from the great historical traditions of the past and investigates contemporary issues related to the arts, the environment, gender, law, medicine, politics, race, science, and technology. Philosophical investigation hones the mind into a sharp intellectual tool which can be deployed to better understand the world and our place in it. The Department of Philosophy offers a BA in philosophy, a BA in philosophy and law, a BA in environmental philosophy, an MA in environmental philosophy, a 5 year BA/MA degree in environmental philosophy, and a JD/MA in Environmental Philosophy. Other certificates and minors are offered as well.

The Philosophy Department at the University of Montana recognizes that diversity, inclusion, and equity are critical to the wellbeing of democratic culture and are necessary to achieve excellence in learning, teaching, and student development. Our learning environments are enriched when students’ diverse perspectives are respected and shared. We respect all students’ backgrounds, are committed to equality, and do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, ancestry, religion, creed, sex, age, marital or familial status, physical or mental disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. We endeavor to choose course assignments, activities, and readings that are respectful of and responsive to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
