Thesis or Professional Paper Plan Option

30 credits

Year 1: Autumn Semester (minimum 9cr)

  • Meet with advisor to form study plan
  • Take ANTH 500
  • Take an ANTH graduate seminar
  • Take remedial or elective classes

Year 1: Spring Semester (minimum 9cr)

  • Take two ANTH graduate seminars
  • Take remedial or elective classes
  • Develop a detailed M.A. Project Plan
  • Appoint M.A. Project committee

Year 2: Autumn Semester (minimum 6cr)

  • Take ANTH 593: Professional Project or ANTH 599: Thesis (3cr)
  • Take elective classes
  • File application for graduation
  • Do thesis research

Year 2: Spring Semester (minimum6cr)

  • Take ANTH 593 or 599 (3cr)
  • Take elective classes Write thesis
  • Defend thesis
  • File final draft of thesis at Grad School

Non-Thesis Plan Option

36 credits

Year 1: Autumn Semester (minimum 9cr)

  • Meet with advisor to form study plan
  • Take ANTH 500
  • Take an ANTH graduate seminar
  • Take remedial or elective classes

Year 1: Spring Semester (minimum 9cr)

  • Take two ANTH graduate seminars
  • Take remedial or elective classes
  • Develop a plan for M.A. scholarly work
  • Form M.A. committee to oversee scholarly work Pass comprehensive evaluation administered by your committee

Year 2: Autumn Semester (minimum 9cr)

  • Take an ANTH graduate seminar
  • Take ANTH 597: Research (3cr)
  • Take elective classes
  • File application for graduation
  • Do the scholarly work detailed in your plan

Year 2: Spring Semester (minimum 9cr)

  • Take ANTH 597 (3cr)
  • Take elective classes
  • Finalize scholarly work detailed in your plan
  • File final draft of scholarly work at Anthropology Department

Notes

  • A graduate seminar is any ANTH class numbered between 500 and 589, 595, or 600-694.
  • Please file a dated copy with the Anthropology Department.
  • Your committee must consist of three University of Montana faculty. Your committee chair must be in the Anthropology Department. One of your three members must be from a other than Anthropology. Give your selections to the Anthropology Administrative Assistant, who will forward them to the Grad School.
  • This procedure requires submission of a form to the Graduate School. This procedure will have a deadline each semester. Please check the current course schedule or contact the Graduate School to find out about these deadlines.
  • Remedial classes: one class in each of the four subfields (archaeology, linguistics, physical, socio-cultural) and a class in statistics are required prior to graduation if not taken during your undergraduate career. Elective classes are any class you wish to take that is marked UG in the catalog. Avoid taking more than 6 credits in UG classes numbered less than 400
  • This form requires a fee to be paid to the Graduate School. Be sure to save your receipt.
