The Chemistry Department at UM

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry emphasizes close interactions with students and is home to 20 faculty who manage internationally recognized research programs in addition to teaching, mentoring and advising graduate and undergraduate students. Faculty and staff provide a supportive and responsive environment that is not always possible in large departments. Students will also find that the department has a nationally competitive and productive research program.

As a student in the Department, you will join some 130 undergraduate majors and 30 graduate students pursuing education and research in chemistry or biochemistry. The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry awards BS, BA, MA, MS, and PhD degrees in a variety of disciplines.

Graduates and undergraduates alike enjoy unparalleled access to faculty’s knowledge and experience with upper-division class sizes averaging between 15 and 20 students and graduate courses between 5 and 10 students.

The Department hosts weekly seminars with expert speakers from around the United States and the world.
