Chemistry Stores Frequently Asked Questions

Access Concerns

  • WHY AREN'T THE DOORS UNLOCKING FOR ME?  The most common problem with access is encountered by graduate students being unaware of the restricted access that they have to Chem Stores.  If you are a graduate student, please refer to the access classifications on the Chemistry Stores homepage.  These restrictions cannot be altered, so you need to plan your work around your access.
  • DO I NEED A PHYSICAL KEY FOR THE GAS CAGE DOOR?  If you're looking to get into the outdoor gas cylinder storage area, you do not need a second key.  Swiping your Griz Card at the Chem Stores door unlocks both the building door and the cylinder storage door.  The cylinder storage door latch can stick occasionally, so if you can't push it open, pull the door towards you, swipe your card, and push the door open.
  • ACCESS ISSUE NOT LISTED ABOVE?  Please contact the Chemistry main office; with a vacant Admin position the issue may not be quickly resolved.  Be prepared to provide your 790-ID number, employment classification, and home department to help resolve the issue.

Stock Issues

Chem Stores' gas cylinders, Dry Ice, and Liquid Nitrogen are delivered on Thursdays with few fluctuations.  If you need a specialty gas cylinder that is not stocked in the Chem Stores gas cage, please contact Norco to place your order at 406-728-6362.  Please have your name, type of gas and tank size, delivery location, and purchasing index ready when you call.

If the dry ice appears empty or close to empty, please call Norco at 406-728-6362 (industrial option) to notify them that a dry ice tank for Chem Stores needs delivering.  If the liquid nitrogen appears empty, please try the second nitrogen tank (if you require assistance with changing over the hose, please ask around your department for someone with siphon hose changing experience), and if both are empty, please call Norco to notify them of the empty tanks.

Chem Stores no longer supplies glassware or lab safety materials.  Please order these items and other chemicals through GrizMart.

Transaction Documentation

Please document your Chem Stores transactions as accurately as possible to allow for the accounting process to be completed as smoothly as possible.

  • COMMUNAL MATERIALS (DRY ICE, LIQUID NITROGEN) Please complete the yellow cards as thoroughly as possible, but the bare minimum information needed is your name, your PI/affiliated lab name, purchasing index, and the labeled quantity of materials taken (liters for nitrogen and blocks for dry ice).  Whole units only.  Additional information is always helpful.
  • TANK TRANSACTIONS:  Please be mindful that we have both Norco and AWG tank tags to document tank transactions.  If you are returning a Norco tank, please only use a Norco tank tag.  Please complete the AWG transaction tickets (temporarily orange until AWG provides their own transaction tickets) for any transaction with AWG tanks.  If you are swapping a Norco tank for an AWG tank, you will have to complete one card for the returned tank and another for the taken tank to avoid any cross-vendor documentation issues.

Common Courtesy

Packages labeled as chemicals, hazardous, or flammable are delivered to Chem Stores.  Please do not take what doesn't belong to your lab.
