How to Become a Major
Entering students can simply declare Communication Studies as their major when enrolling. Students who desire to change to a Communication Studies major can do so by bringing a completed "Major/Minor/Option Change Form" to the main office for a signature from the Chair (forms are avialble in our main Office--LA 301).
Once you are accepted into the department as a COMM major, you will be assigned an advisor with whom you will work to plan your major course of study. You will meet each semester with your advisor during designated advising times (and more often if you wish). At this time you will receive approval to pre-register for courses. No COMM majors can register without an advising number. Communication Studies Major Advising Checklist
B.A. Core Requirements
All majors in Communication Studies must complete COMX 111A, 115S, 220S, 240H, 460/461, and a course in statistics (either SOCI 202, STAT 216, PSYX 222, EDU 421, or an equivalent course). A minimum of 36 (but no more than 65) COMX credits, with 18 of those credits in courses numbered 300 and above, is required.
To meet the Upper-Division Writing Expectation for the major, students in Communication Studies must successfully complete one of the following courses: COMX 347, 413, 414, 421, 422, 424, 445, 447, 449 or another course specially approved for this purpose by the University curriculum committee.
Organizational Communication Option
The organizational communication option focuses on the internal and external affairs of a variety of types of organizations and institutions, including businesses, governmental agencies, health care providers, labor unions, educational systems, religious groups, non-profit advocacy groups, social movements, and so forth. The course work in this area includes offerings of a more theoretical and historical nature and courses with a more practical skill-building orientation. Both are important to a well-rounded understanding of the world of work today, as they are to the development of citizenship within a complex organizational society.
Students in the Organizational Communication option must fulfill all the core requirements in Communication Studies (COMX 111A, 115S, 220S, 240L, 460/461, and a course in statistics). In addition, students must take at least 5 courses from the following: COMX 210, 351, 352, 412 or 413, 415, 421, 422, 423, 424, 425, or approved special topics classes (that is, an approved class numbered COMX 291, 391, or 491).
Students in the Organizational Communication Option must also complete 3 allied courses outside of COMM from the following list: ANTY 220S; BGMT 340, 444; BMKT 325, 343, 412; PSCI 361, 462, 466, 467; SOCI 306, 345, 371; CHTH 355, 445; HTH 465, or other approved course. Courses should be selected in consultation with a department faculty advisor.
A minor in Nonprofit Administration is highly recommended to enhance this option.
Communication and Human Relationships Option
The Human Relationships option focuses on communication through face-to-face interaction. It includes the study of basic processes of verbal and nonverbal messages, but also on the complex processes of conflict management, relationship development, lifespan development, gender, and family dynamics. The option is particularly applicable to professional interests pertaining to social services, families, children, aging, and other facets of interpersonal relations and human development.
Students in the Human Relationships option must fulfill all of the core requirements for Communication Studies (COMX 111A, 115S, 220S, 240L, 460/461, and a course in statistics). In addition, students must take at least 5 courses from the following: COMX 202, 311, 380, 412 or 413, 414, 415, 485, or approved special topics classes (that is, an approved class numbered COMX 291, 391, or 491).
To enhance this option, students are required to take at least 4 courses from the following list: ANTH 227, 427; COUN 242, 475, 485; EDEC 310; HFD 412; PSYX 230S, 233, 345, 348, 360S, 385S; SOCI 220S, 275S, 332, 330, 350, 382; SW 300, 420, 455, 460, or other approved course. All courses should be selected in consultation with your faculty advisor.
A minor in Human and Family Development (HFD) is highly recommended to enhance this option.
Rhetoric and Public Discourse Option
The Rhetoric and Public Discourse option focuses on the development and analysis of public messages. Courses in this emphasis explore issues of persuasion, argumentation, message composition, and message evaluation. Specific attention is paid to the interplay between social structures and public discourse. Courses emphasize both practical skills and theory. This option is particularly relevant to career positions emphasizing public communication and persuasion in areas such as law, government, and private or nonprofit organizations.
Students in the Rhetoric and Public Discourse option must fulfill all the core requirements for Communication Studies (COMX 111A, 115S, 220S, 240L, 460/461, and a course in statistics). Students must also take at least 4 courses from the following: COMX 241S, 242, 343, 347, 349, 380, 445, 447, 449, or approved special topics classes (that is, an approved class numbered COMX 291, 391, or 491).
To enhance the option, students must take an additional 4 courses from the following list: ANTY 102H; CCS 203; ECNS 433, 445; ENFM 180, 381, 427; ENLT 120L; ENST 230H, 367, 420; HSTA 102H, 262, 270H, 321, 322, 344, 345, 364, 478; HSTR 272E, 302, 364, 384E; MAR 101L, NRSM 449; PHL 112E, 235, 422; PSCI 250E, 342, 343, 352, 355, 444, 471, 472; SOCI 220S, 225, 325, 350, 470, 485; WGST 119, 263, 323, 324, 342, 363, or other approved course. Courses should be selected in consultation with a department faculty advisor.
A minor in Women's and Gender Studies or Climate Change is highly recommended to enhance this option.
