Writing @ Work Conference with Gary Fisketjon
UM will host renowned editor Gary Fisketjon, vice president of Knopf, for the Writing @ Work Conference on Friday, March 16. Fisketjon has edited Raymond Carver, Tobias Wolff, Richard Ford, Haruki Murakami, Donna Tartt, Cormac McCarthy and UM's own Bill Kittredge, among others.
Sarah Bowlin, agent at Aevitas Creative Management, will join Fisketjon to discuss the publishing world. Before becoming an agent, Bowlin spent a decade as an editor of literary fiction and nonfiction, first at Riverhead Books and most recently at Henry Holt & Company. She has edited many acclaimed writers, including Juan Gabriel Vásquez, Kim Zupan and Julie Buntin. As an agent, she is working with emerging voices Vanessa Veselka, Aysegul Savas, and Kevin Nguyen. She is interested in bold voices—specifically stories of strong or difficult women and unexpected narratives of place, identity, and the shifting ways we see ourselves and each other.
There will be many other editors, publishers and writers, along with entrepreneurs, to discuss professional aspects of the writing life and to share advice on how to make writing a career. Brian Schott, Publisher of the Whitefish Review; Susanna Sonnenberg, New York Times Bestselling author; Paul Gladen, Director of Blackstone LaunchPad; and Gabriella Gutiérrez y Muhs, Washington State Arts Commissioner, will be joined by authors Sarah Aswell, Judy Blunt, Heather Cahoon, Chris Dombrowski, Debra Earling, Pete Fromm, David Gates, Deirdre McNamer, Jenny Montgomery, Tim O'Leary, Jennifer Sheets and Robert Stubblefield.
The conference is free and open to the public, 12 – 5 pm in the UC Theater of the University of Montana campus.
