Plant Evolutionary Genetics
We seek to understand the evolutionary and genetic mechanisms that maintain variation within populations, cause adaptive divergence, and lead to speciation. That is, we are evolutionary geneticists... Recent work has addressed everything from the genetic basis of parallel evolution of floral traits to the dual role of chromosomal rearrangements in speciation to the consequences of selfish evolution by centromeres and mitochondria.
We mostly study monkeyflowers (Mimulus), because they ROCK!!! They are tremendously diverse, experimentally and genetically tractable, and have excellent genomic resources. Also, they demand study in some of our favorite places, including Yellowstone National Park, the Oregon Cascades and Coast (below), and Missoula, Montana.
