Welcome to the Hutto Lab!

I have been a faculty member in biology and wildlife biology at the University of Montana since 1977. Broadly speaking, my students and I focus our research on avian ecology. Currently, I work in conifer forests that have been restored by severe wildfires, and I am asking how land management practices both before and after fire affect the presence and success those bird species that depend on burned forest conditions.

I plan to continue employing student field technicians for this research and will continue with my efforts to disseminate our fire research results beyond the publication route because scientific publications, while necessary, are insufficient as avenues to let others in on the secrets we uncover.

Birds have a lot to tell us about land stewardship; all we have to do is listen!
