Brent with the Erlangen virologists.

October 4-5, 2016:  Brent traveled to Erlangen Germany to deliver a keynote talk titled " Uncovering the influence of genetic diversity of human cytomegalovirus on dissemination, spread and pathology" at the Annual Research Retreat for the School of Molecular Communication at  Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU).  FAU has a strong virology research group, which is housed in a devoted building adjacent to an impressive botanical garden in Erlangen.  The two day research retreat was held at a castle (ger: “schloss”) in the nearby town of Lichtenfels, and featured other keynote speakers from Italy, Australia, and Finland, as well as graduate students and postdoctoral fellows from FAU.   Research topics pertained to “host-pathogen” relationships in context of plant and animal viruses, bacterial and protozoan pathogens, and intrinsic host defenses.
