Am I required to take an Introductory Writing Course?

Are you just starting out at UM?

Yes-Did your score place you into WRIT 201? You can check the Writing Placement Scores Rubric.

  • Yes-If you placed into WRIT 201, that class will count as both your Introductory and Intermediate Writing Course and will fulfill both of those general education requirements.
  • No-You are still required to take an Introductory Writing Course.

Yes-Do you have a credit that you think should count for an Introductory Writing course?

  • Yes-Check Degree Works to see if your Introductory Writing Course requirement is listed as complete. If so, you are not required to take another one.
  • No-You are still required to take an Introductory Writing Course.

No-Have you taken and Intermediate/Advanced Writing Course?

  • Yes-You are still required to take and Introductory Writing Course
  • No-You are still required to take and Introductory Writing Course

What if I took an AP/IB Exam?

I took the AP Exams

I took the English Language and Composition exam

  • If you scored a 3 or higher, you have a credit for Introductory Writing; you are still required to take an Intermediate and Advanced Writing Course

I took the English Literature and Composition Exam

  • If you scored 4 or higher, you have credit for Intermediate Writing and Lit 110; you are still required to take an Advanced Writing Course

I took the IB Exams

I took the HL Language A: English-Language & Literature Exam

  • If you scored a 4 or higher on either exam, you have credit for Introductory and Intermediate Writing; you still need to take an Advanced Writing Course.

I took the HL Language A: English-Literature exam

  • If you scored a 4 or higher on either exam, you have credit for Introductory and Intermediate Writing; you still need to take an Advanced Writing Course.

  • Yes-You have met the general education requirement but may not satisfy your major requirement. Consult with your major department chair to determine whether the class with satisfy the major requirement.
  • No-You are still required to take the advanced writing course designated in your major.

Are you trying to substitute a writing course from another institution to satisfy your Advanced Writing Course requirement?

  • Yes-Consult with your department chair to determine whether an Advanced Writing Course Substitution is appropriate.
