The Application Process

Thank you for your interest in earning your M.A. or Ph.D. in history at the University of Montana. We look forward to receiving your application.

Applying for Graduate Admission

Prospective graduate students apply for admission through Graduate School Admissions.

Materials Required by the Department of History

In addition to the application materials required by the Graduate School, the Department of History also requires:

  • GRE scores are not required. International Students may need to submit TOEFL, IELTS, or MELAB. See the International Student Admission section of the Graduate School web site.
  • Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended.
  • Three (3) letters of recommendation.
  • A Statement of Purpose (2-3 pages) describing your background, research interests, professional goals, and reasons for choosing the Department of History at the University of Montana. Please also indicate the faculty members with whom you are interested in working.
  • A writing sample (preferably a substantial piece of historical writing based on original research).

Application Deadlines for the History Department

MA

  • Deadline for MA (Fall Semester start): Complete applications received by February 1 will be considered for teaching assistantships and fellowships. Complete applications received by May 1 will be considered for admission. After May 1, space permitting, applications will be considered for admission on a rolling basis until July 31.
  • Deadline for MA (Spring Semester start): Complete application packet must be received by October 15.

PhD

  • Deadline for PhD (Fall Semester start): Complete application must be received by February 1. All applications received by February 1 will be considered for teaching assistantships and fellowships.
