A native of Big Timber, Montana, LTC Carlson received his commission as an Ordnance Officer from Gonzaga University. His civilian education includes a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History from Gonzaga University and Master of Science Degree in Education from Kansas State University.
His Army career began at Fort Carson Colorado, as an Ammunition Platoon Leader and Ammunition Supply Point Control Officer in the 60th Ordnance Company; He then served as Support Operations Ammunition Officer in the 68th Corps Support Battalion. After leaving Fort Carson LTC Carlson attended Explosive Ordnance Disposal School at Eglin AFB Florida and then took command of the 703d Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Company at Fort Knox, Kentucky. While in command he deployed to Iraq in support Operation Iraqi Freedom. Following command LTC Carlson returned to Fort Carson, Colorado and served in the 242d EOD Battalion where he served as the operations officer and later the S3. He moved to the 71st EOD Group where he served as the S4. LTC Carlson then deployed to Iraq as a part CJTF Troy (counter-IED) where he served as the officer in charge of the Combined Explosive Exploitation Cell (CEXC) which was responsible for exploiting all IEDs in Iraq. LTC Carlson’s most recent assignment was as the Chief of the Neutralization Section in the Defeat the Device Branch, NATO Counter-Improvised Explosive Device Center of Excellence (C-IED COE) located in Madrid, Spain. During this assignment he was responsible for providing subject matter expertise in order to support the NATO Alliance, its Partners, and the International Community in the fight against IEDs, and cooperates to increase the security of Allied Nations and Troops deployed in theatres of operations, reducing or eliminating the threats from improvised explosive devices used by terrorists or insurgents.
His military education includes the Ammunition Ordnance Officer Basic Course, the Combined Logistics Officer Advance Course, the Combined Arms and Service Staff School, the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Course, and the Command and General Staff College Intermediate Level Education. In addition LTC Carlson has attended numerous national and international courses related to IED disposal, IED exploitation and homemade explosives.
His awards include the Bronze Star Medal with OLC, the Joint Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Army Commendation Medal with OLC, the Army Achievement Medal with 2 OLC, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, The Iraqi Campaign Medal with two service stars, the Joint Meritorious Unit Award, the Valorous Unit Award, the Combat Action Badge, and the Master Explosive Ordnance Disposal Badge.
LTC Carlson is married to the former Marsha Loyer, of Aberdeen Washington. They have two children, Tanner age 12 and Ellie age 9.
