I am now working on research in two areas.
I am working on cultural evolution, especially the evolution of technology, in collaboration with anthropology Ph. D. student Cheyenne Laue and CS Master's student George Lesica. Some specific goals include:
- Writing a simulation of the evolution of technology. We are planning to use a cartesian genetic programming implementation digital logic-gate circuits as a model of technology.
- Cheyenne Laue, Dr. Anna Prentiss, and I are working on a paper on adaptive landscapes for an anthropology audience.
- I am working with George Lesica on the role of neutrality in evolution on the NK and circuit fitness landscape models.
- A long term goal is to better understand the similarities and differences between biological evolution, cultural evolution, and artificial evolution.
I did research on the theory of evolutionary computation for over 20 years. Prior to that I worked in pure mathematics (geometric topology) and applied mathematics (homotopiy fixed points)
My recreational activites include mountain and road biking, cross country skiing, hiking, and hunting. He maintains the websites of the Nordic Ski Club missoulanordic.org, outdoor club rockymountaineers.com, and a mountain bike group http://thursdaynightmtbr.org.
