H&S Scholarships and Fellowships

H&S General Scholarships are awarded to University of Montana students either studying or enrolled in the College of Humanities and Sciences.

Application Requirements: Applicants must be enrolled in College of Humanities and Sciences.

Award Criteria: Selections will be made based on academic standing and financial need.

The Genevieve LaMotte Fund provides scholarships to undergraduate students for international experiences.

Eligibility: Undergraduate students in the College of Humanities and Sciences are eligible to apply.

Application Requirements: Applicants must provide

  1. H&S Scholarship Information Form,
  2. A short essay detailing the benefits of international experiences,
  3. Proposal for international experience (of any duration).

Award Criteria: Selections will be based on academic standing and financial need. Special consideration will be given to applications showing the transformative nature of international study.

Note: Any student preparing for international travel must register with the Office of International Programs prior to receiving any H&S scholarship awards.

The Richard Drake award is designed to honor excellence in writing within the humanities, with special consideration given to those studying history, literature, philosophy, religion, politics and the classics. Two awards will be given annually: one to a graduate student and one to an undergraduate student.

Eligibility: Undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in a course in the College of Humanities and Sciences are eligible to apply.

Application Requirements: Applicants must provide

  1. H&S Scholarship Information Form
  2. A paper discussing any theme based on a humanistic discipline
  3. A letter of recommendation from a H&S professor

Please include the following information when submitting the paper:

  1. Was this paper for a class? If so, which class
  2. What was your motivation for discussing this topic/theme?
  3. Any other pertinent information that you think may help the Committee in the selection process

Application Deadline: April 15th

Award Criteria: Entrees will be assesed on the basis of excellence in writing, imagination in research, and persuasion of argument. NOTE: Undergraduate papers typically range in length from 10 to 15 pages, while Graduate papers range from 15 to 25 pages.

The Helen Ingersoll Cappadocia and Ezio Cappadocia Travel Scholarship provides annual assistance in support of study abroad experiences for students in the College of Humanities and Sciences.

Eligibility: Students receiving credit for a study abroad experience

Application Requirements: Applicants must provide

  1. H&S Scholarship Information Form,
  2. Be registered for an accredited study abroad experience through the College of Humanities and Sciences.

Award Criteria: Selections will be made based on academic standing and financial need.

Emma's Legacy Award provides an annual award to graduate or undergraduate students in H&S.

Application Requirements: Applicants must demonstrate high academic achievement and be committed to completing their degree. 

Award Criteria: Applicants must submit a written account of Emma's legacy, referencing the significance of the Simpson/Braig family Native American dress (located in the Payne Family Native American Center). 

The Henry and Fannie Clift Kain and Daniel and Jessie McKay Scholarship provides an annual award to undergraduates at UM, with preferential consideration given to those majoring in, or expecting to major in, the social sciences. The scholarship is administered by H&S.

Application Requirements: Applicants must be majoring in Anthropology, Communication Studies, Economics, Environmental Studies, Geography, Political Sciences, Psychology or Sociology.

Award Criteria: Selections will be made on the basis of academic standing and financial need.

The Cail Physical/Bio-Sciences Scholarship provides annual assistance to undergraduate students pursuing degrees in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physics or Mathematics.

Application Requirements: Undgraduate students pursuing degrees in one or more of these disciplines: Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physics, Mathematics. Students must maintain a GPA of 3.2 or above.

Award Criteria: Selection swill be made on the basis of academic standing and financial need.

The Helen J. Olson Scholarship provides annual awards for students enrolled in the study of literature or history. The scholarship is administered by H&S.

Application Requirements: Applicants must be enrolled in the study of English, History or Modern & Classical Languages & Literatures.

Award Criteria: Selections will be made on the basis of academic standing and financial need.

The Rose Southworth Megee Scholarship in Literature provides an annual award to literature students in the Departments of English and Modern & Classical Languages & Literatures. The scholarship is administered by H&S.

Application Requirements: Applicants must be studying literature in either the English or MCLL Departments.

Award Criteria: Selections will be made on the basis of academic standing and financial need.

The Jim Messina Scholarship for Future Community Problem Solvers provides annual assistance to UM undergraduate or graduate students in the College of Humanities and Sciences.

Application Requirements: Applicants provide

  1. An unoffical transcript(s) *Graduate students must include both undergraduate and graduate transcripts
  2. Letter of Recommendation
  3. Declaration of financial need, as determined by Financial Aid's analysis of completed FAFSA application
  4. A short essay describing how their education will enable them to solve the difficult problems facing communities today

Applicants must also be students in the College of Humanities and Sciences.

Award Criteria: In addition to academic standing and financial need, selections will be based on the quality of the essay submission.

The Isabel Kamps Murray Scholarship to Enhance Rhodes Scholar Competitiveness provides support to undergraduate students in H&S who have been identified as potential Rhodes Scholars. 

Award Criteria: Selections will be determined by a committee that includes the Rhodes Scholarship advisor and at least one faculty Rhodes Scholar.

The Bill and Jo Reynolds Scholarship provides merit scholarships to deserving students enrolled in the College of Humanities and Sciences.

Application Requirements: Applicants must be enrolled in the College of Humanities and Sciences.

Award Criteria: Selections will be made on the basis of academic standing and financial need.

The Theodore L., Betty B. and Eileen Fuller Scholarship provides scholarships of at least $1,000 each for undergraduate students in the College of Humanities and Sciences.

Application Requirements: Applicants must be enrolled in the College of Humanities and Sciences. Applicants must have completed their freshman year with at least a 3.5 GPA.

Award Criteria: Selections will be based on academic standing and financial need.

The Wiegenstein Family Fund provides scholarships to deserving students in the pre-medicine curriculum in either Chemistry or the Division of Biological Sciences at UM. Every third year, preference shall be given to students who are enrolled members of any American Indian Tribe. The scholarships are administered by H&S.

Application Requirements: Applicants must be active participants in the pre-medicine curriculum in either Chemistry or the Division of Biological Sciences at UM.

Award Criteria: Selections will be based on academic standing and financial need.

The Minnie Spurgin Fullam and Bess Reed & Dallas J. Reed Memorial Scholarships provide annual awards to incoming freshmen at UM who were outstanding high school senior participants in the annual fall Montana Model United Nations Conference.

*No application necessary. Scholarships are awarded at the Montana Model UN Conference.
