Linguistics Major

Student who major in linguistics are required to complete 35-37 credits as follows:

Required Core Courses (18 credits)

  • LING 270S  Introduction to Linguistics (3 credits)
  • LING 375X  Linguistic Ecology and Language Endangerment (3 credits)
  • LING 470  Linguistic Analysis (3 credits)
  • LING 471  Phonetics and Phonology (3 credits)
  • LING 472  Generative Syntax (3 credits)
  • LING 489  Morphology (3 credits)

Required Seminar (3 credits)

  • LING 494 Linguistics Seminar in various topics (3 credits)

Language Courses (8-10 credits)

8 to 10 credits of language courses (typically 2 semesters) taken at UM.

Language courses taken to satisfy the University's General Education requirements cannot be used to satisfy language requirement for the major. 

Elective Courses (6 credits)

Students must take 2 courses from among the following:

  • LING 473      Language and Culture (3 credits)
  • LING 474      Historical Linguistics (3 credits)
  • LING 475      Linguistic Field Methods (3 credits)
  • LING 477      Bilingualism (3 credits)
  • LING 478      Learner Language (3 credits)
  • LING 484      North American Indigenous Languages and Linguistics (3 credits)
  • One course from:
    • MCLG 410  Methods for Teaching Foreign Language
    • SPNS 305  Spanish Phonetics and Phonology 
    • SPNS 400  Applied Languistics
    • ANTY 476  Methods for Native Languages
