Environmental Philosophy M.A.

Our environmental philosophy M.A. is the most applied philosophy graduate degree in the nation. It takes advantage of the department’s scholarly expertise in wilderness issues, Thoreau, animal studies, philosophy of ecology, synthetic biology, gender and environment, aesthetics, climate ethics, moral theory, and the Anthropocene. It also involves field trips to Yellowstone National Park and the tribally operated Bison Range, an internship with an environmental organization, and a capstone project in an engaged philosophy topic of your choice. We want students to leave here with skills, both philosophical and practical.

We have a ‘distinctive program designation’ from the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education. This means we offer something unique in the Western U.S.. A prospective graduate student who is a resident of a Western state can enroll at 150% of Montana’s in-state tuition. The Western states covered by this agreement include Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.

A Master's degree in environmental philosophy can stand on its own or provide valuable preparation for a Ph.D. in philosophy, law school, public policy work, non-profit advocacy, or environmental writing, analysis, and consulting. World-class faculty with environmental expertise in a wide range of disciplines teach elsewhere across campus, making UM an exciting place to study environmental philosophy.
