Our Program

We are excited that you are interested in the Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies program at the University of Montana! The Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies Program at The University of Montana is at the forefront of interdisciplinary studies. The Program currently brings together undergraduate students and faculty from almost every discipline in the College of Humanities and Sciences who have an interest in studies relating to women, gender and sexuality. Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies encourage the production, discussion, and dissemination of knowledge about women's experiences, oppressions, and achievements in Montana, the United States, and the world. In the last decade, this focus has broadened to include the study of gender, sex and sexualities. By fostering an awareness of cultural and international diversity, as well as of the circulations of power mediated by race, class, age, and sexual orientation, Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies encourage students to think critically and to envision justice for all peoples. Director Elizabeth Hubble welcomes you to stop by our office in Eck Liberal Arts 138A to learn more about the program and student opportunities.

Learn more about our Graduate Certificate in Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies. The focus of the Graduate Certificate is on intersectionality; students in the program explore links between their chosen fields of study with an interdisciplinary approach that addresses questions of gender, race, and class.

Our program offers an undergraduate minor and an undergraduate major in Women's Gender and Sexuality Studies, and graduate courses. We sponsor a number of campus events related to our mission, and we offer scholarships for students pursuing issues in women, gender and sexuality studies.

Why Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies?

In a nutshell, Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies encourages students to think critically and to envision justice for all peoples. A Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies option gives you the opportunity to explore areas of history, sociology, psychology, culture, religion, etc. that women have influenced for generations yet have not received the focus and attention to their contributions that their male counterparts have had. If you are a woman or work with, live with, attend school with, know, love, and interact with women, you will be affected by the issues that women’s studies courses examine.

You may want to consider a Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies minor. Since there is such a wide range of courses that are cross-listed as Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies, you may already be taking many of the required courses! And, if you are just starting your university career, a Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies minor fits nicely into any major, complementing other coursework.
