Requirements for Ph.D. in Cultural Heritage and Applied Anthropology from M.A.

Checklist

Required for Students Entering the Ph.D. Program with a MA Degree (30 credits past MA, 60 credits total)

  • Meet with Advisor to Develop a Graduate Contract
  • Select Additional Faculty for Ph.D. Committee
  • ANTY 600 Issues in Cultural Heritage
  • ANTY 601 Proposal Preparation and Contract Management
  • ANTY 602 Cultural Heritage Policy and Practice
  • Anthropology Graduate Seminar (numbered 501-595, 603-694)
  • Develop a Detailed Dissertation Proposal
  • Form Dissertation Committee and report its composition to Department Administrative Assistant
  • Comprehensive Evaluation
  • 12 credits in elective classes numbered 400-589, 595-596, or 600-694
  • Apply to Graduate School for Ph.D. Degree if all items above are completed, by Grad School deadline the semester before you plan to finish
  • 9 to 10 credits in ANTH 699 Dissertation (and up to 10 credits in ANTH 597 if deferred
    previously)
  • Complete Dissertation
  • Dissertation Defense and Final Review of Portfolio

Model Schedule

Starting with MA Degree (30 credits past MA, 60 credits total)

Year 1: Autumn Semester (minimum 9 credits)

  • Meet with advisor to develop graduate contract
  • Select additional faculty to form Ph.D. committee
  • Take ANTY 600
  • Take an ANTY graduate seminar
  • Take remedial or elective classes

Year 1: Spring Semester (minimum 9 credits)

  • Take ANTY 601
  • Take ANTY 602
  • Take remedial or elective classes
  • Develop Dissertation Proposal
  • Form dissertation committee
  • Pass comprehensive evaluation administered by dissertation committee

Year 2: Autumn Semester (minimum 6 credits)

  • Take ANTY 699: Dissertation (3 credits)
  • Do dissertation research
  • Take elective classes
  • File Application for Graduation

Year 2: Spring Semester (minimum 6 credits)

  • Take ANTH 699 (6 credits)
  • Write Dissertation
  • Defend Dissertation
  • File final draft of dissertation with Graduate School

Notes

  • A graduate seminar is any ANTH class numbered between 500 and 589, 595, or 600-694.
  •  Ph.D. Committee is normally three UM anthropology faculty. Dissertation committee is five UM faculty, one of whom is from a department other than anthropology. In all cases the Chair of a Ph.D. or dissertation committee must be a UM anthropology faculty member. Give your selections to the Anthropology Administrative Assistant, who will forward them to the Grad School.
  • This procedure required submission of a form to the Graduate School. This procedure will have a deadline each semester. Please check the current course schedule or contact the Graduate School to find out about these deadlines.
  • Remedial classes: One class in each of the four subfields (archaeology, linguistics, physical, socio-cultural) and a class in statistics are required prior to graduation if not taken during your undergraduate career. Your advisor may assign other remedial classes if your undergraduate career did not include classes that he/she was expecting you to have taken.
  • This form requires a fee to be paid to the Graduate School. Be sure to save your receipt.
