Why Should I Join?

Do you feel strongly motivated to join the Phi Beta Kappa Association of Montana? Here are the most common responses we receive when we ask that question:

I don’t need another club.

Don’t worry – if you are too busy to take part in the social activities the association sponsors, that’s fine. However, simply by joining the Phi Beta Kappa Association of Montana, you will turn your achievement – induction into Phi Beta Kappa – into more than a pin you wear on occasion or a line you highlight on your résumé. You turn that honor into a deeply appreciated gift to students in the state of Montana. These students are struggling to complete bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degrees while living in a state with some of the lowest average incomes in the nation. That’s where the Phi Beta Kappa Association of Montana steps in. With generous contributions from our members, we will award merit scholarships to exceptional students and Teaching Excellence awards to some of the most outstanding faculty members at the University of Montana.

I’m already a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

You can be proud that you have earned lifelong membership in the national Phi Beta Kappa Society. However, membership in the Association nearest you is not automatic, so you are not yet a member of the Montana association! Those who become members will have the satisfaction of knowing that they are helping highly deserving students each year who deeply appreciate the scholarships we provide them. We firmly intend for the Phi Beta Kappa Association of Montana to become one of the most active in the nation.

I didn’t graduate from college in Montana, so I can’t join the Phi Beta Kappa Association of Montana, can I?

Yes, you can. Whether you graduated from Stanford or Dartmouth, Princeton or UCLA, the Phi Beta Kappa Association of Montana exists to bring together Phi Betes who are living in Montana or who want to help students and recognize outstanding faculty at the University of Montana.

What do I get out of membership?

Sure, it’s great to know you’re helping students and faculty carry on the Phi Beta Kappa tradition of academic excellence. But many of our members are just as passionate about their own lifelong learning – indeed, our planned lectures, seminars, and excursions will serve these members’ needs, and meeting those needs is an extremely important part of our mission.

I don’t want to be on another mailing list.

Don’t worry – we will not share our membership list with anyone, and if you decide to leave the Association, we take your name off the list. (Well, we might send you a reminder for a year or two, just in case, but after that – nothing – we promise!) And you will not be inundated with mailings; we will send only the regular E-Newsletters, and perhaps one reminder letter if you haven’t sent your annual dues by April of each year.
