The Center for Biomolecular Structure and Dynamics

The Center for Biomolecular Structure and Dynamics focuses on structural and mechanistic biology at the molecular level. There are currently approximately 20 faculty members who are active participants in the Center. The common research theme is that all BSD participants are engaged in structural or mechanistic studies of biological molecules. Specific research areas include biosynthesis and metabolic engineering, DNA-metal interactions, nucleic acid-protein interactions, metalloprotein structure and function, natural products chemistry, neurotransmitter transport, vesicular transport, protein structure, mechanism and biosynthesis, and viral RNA structure and dynamics. Research facilities available to BSD students and faculty are outstanding, with core facilities for spectroscopy, NMR (co-sponsored with the Department of Chemistry), X-ray Crystallography and Molecular Computation (co-sponsored with CFSN).  The CBSD also supports a facility for insect cell culture.

The Center for Structural and Functional Neuroscience

The Center for Structural and Functional Neuroscience was established as a Center for Biomedical Research Excellence through the Institutional Development Award program of the NIH National Center for Research Resources. The Center operates at the interface of chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacology, toxicology and molecular biology to advance understanding of protein structure and function in the central nervous system. Multidisciplinary by design, Center investigators hold faculty positions in the Departments of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Chemistry and the Division of Biological Sciences. The Center for Environmental Health Sciences

The Center for Environmental Health Sciences is a new center for the University of Montana. Its goal is to bring together researchers from several different fields to focus on environmental toxicology and human health. Its primary emphases are to study the effects of environmental toxins on the nervous system, cardiovascular system, and cancer biology. Much of this activity deals with how potential toxins in the environment produce their effects at the cellular and molecular level. The center is also a graduate training facility for Chemistry students, although officially housed in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
