Assistant Professor in Geosciences, Payton Gardner, has published an article in the journal “Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems.” Dr. Gardner and co-author David Susong of the Utah Water Science Center sampled gas concentrations in the Gibbon River near the Norris Geyser Basin in Yellowstone National Park. The team discovered gas isotopic compositions in streams retain evidence of volcanic degassing much like adjacent groundwater, which indicates that stream water could be used as a convenient method to monitor volcanic degassing over large regions.
