Certificate Requirements

Expectations

Students will be expected to:

  • Analyze how social, economic, environmental, and foreign-policy conditions influence policies and decisions that affect domestic and international migration
  • Understand the causes and consequences of different types of migration, including labor migration, movements for family formation and reunification, foreign study, as well as refugee movements and other forms of population displacement
  • Understand transnational and domestic migration challenges, including inter-ethnic relations; the economic, social and cultural integration of refugees and other newcomers; and the challenges of multicultural politics
  • Recommend research-supported policy and practice changes that address factors conditioning transnational migration and adaptation

Requirements

The Migration Studies certificate requires completion of 12 credits with a grade of C or higher, including:

  1. Minimum of 6 credits of core courses
  2. Minimum of 6 credits of elective courses. Elective courses can be drawn from one or more of four advising tracks:
    1. Social, political, and economic determinants
    2. Regional contexts
    3. Environmental contributors
    4. Bridging gaps and divisions

Courses completed in fulfillment of the Migration Studies certificate also satisfy a wide range of general-education requirements.
