We are pioneering a new area of tracer interpretation – tracing deformation. Using laboratory analytical facilities, we developed, we’ve shown that geogenic gases – ⁴He and ⁴⁰Ar are released during elastic deformation due to micro-fracturing along and through grain boundaries. These gases can be used to track deformation, and as precursors to full material failure. Funding Sandia LDRD.
