Requirements

A. 32 graduate semester credits

1.  23 credits must be in philosophy courses:

      • 15 of the 23 philosophy credits must be in the core philosophy graduate seminars:

(a) Philosophy of Technology [PHIL 501, 3 credits]

(b) Topics in Value Theory [PHIL 502, 3 credits]

(c) Topics in Environmental Philosophy [PHIL 504, 3 credits]

(d) Issues in the Anthropocene [PHL 505, 3 credits]

(e) Philosophical Foundations of Ecology [PHIL 507, 3 credits]

      • 3 of the 23 philosophy credits are earned in a supervised internship with an environmental organization or government agency [PHIL 598, 3 credits]
      • 2 of the 23 philosophy credits must be in the Philosophy Forum [PHIL 510, 2 credits]
      • 3 of the 23 philosophy credits must be in our overview course in Environmental Ethics [PHIL 422, 3 credits]

2.  9 elective credits:

      • These courses may be philosophy courses or any of the wide range of environmental courses offered outside the department. Courses outside of the department must be approved by the graduate advisor [9 credits] 

B. 4 thesis credits

      • Students must successfully complete and defend a 30-40 page thesis on a topic in environmental philosophy [PHIL 599, 4 credits]
