MONTU Algae

The Collection

The Montana Algal collection consists of marine and freshwater algae. Over 30 specimens are mounted on sheets (wet mounts) and the rest are in packets. In total there are just over 450 collections. The majority of the collection is historical and was collected over 80 years ago, many collected in the early 1900s. Notable collectors include Nathaniel Lyon Gardner, Fred A. Barkley, Marshall A. Howe, J. W. Blankenship, and E. G. Britton. Many of the collections came to MONTU through exchanges, duplicate sets sent from The Field Museum, The New York Botanical Garden, and The Herbarium of the University of California Berkeley. Several collections are from Montana, however, most are non-Montana collections that span from New York, Utah, California, all the way to Brazil and the Bermuda Islands. The Algal collection has yet to be digitized, however, if interested you can visit the Macroalgal Consortium of Herbaria database to view collections from around the world.
